Chapter 22

At home, Eva searched through her family's book of spells. She wasn't entirely sure what type of spell she was searching for, but it would more than likely smack her in the face when she found it.

Kris had made himself comfortable on the black leather sofa on the other side of her office. He'd made a pretty nice office for her in their extra room on the second floor.

Eva made sure it had bookshelves that lined the one wall. She loved books and read all the time. She loved mysteries, romances and thrillers. She read the occasional paranormal, but couldn't help thinking they were so far out there, that they weren't believable. Kris had his own selection of books he liked, too, but they were mostly Sci-fi, or technical in nature.

"Find what you're looking for yet?"

"Not yet, no."

She looked up to see her husband eyeing her warily. With a sigh, she said "I don't think you should be there with me, when I do the spell."

"Tough, I'm not letting you do this by yourself."

He didn't look at her like he was angry, but he was serious.

"I think I found it," she sat up straighter.

"Are you sure?"

"No, but this is the closest spell I've found yet, and I think it'll fit my needs. I'll need to get a few things before I do it, because I don't have all the items it requires, but I think this one will do."

"Where do you need to go to find these items?"

"Just the store. It's nothing they wouldn't have. I need sea salt, a white candle, a carving tool, which I think we have, along with milk, honey, flowers, and a small bowl. I just need to get a white candle and flowers. Everything else we have."

"So let's go then."

"Kris, I can do this myself, really."

"Why are you dead set against me going with you," he asked, questioning.

She put her head down, and stared at her fingers. She said in a whisper, "I don't want you to see this side of me."

He strode over to her, pulling her out of the chair she was sitting in, and gathered her into his arms.

"You think I'll see you in a different light, and that scares you, because you think I'll look at you differently, am I right?"

"Yes," she sniffled.

He hugged her tighter. "Nothing you do will ever change the way I feel about you, you should know that."

She pulled away and looked up at him, skeptical. She shook her head, not knowing how to phrase her fears properly.

"I don't want to take that risk."

"Honey, I'm not giving you a choice here."

"Always so smug, aren't you," she half laughed.

"Hey, you married me, remember?"

"Yeah, yeah. Let's go to the store and get this over with."

In the kitchen, Eva made the kids a snack, while she waited for her neighbor's daughter to come over and stay with them. She didn’t think they’d be gone too long.

"You both behave for Jessie, okay?"

In unison, they both nodded at her.

"Why can't we go to the store with you and Dad," her oldest whined.
